Where in the World?

We enjoyed watching the Olympics Opening Ceremonies (in between commercials!). It was a fabulous production!! Once the athletes started entering the stadium we started hearing the names of countries that we had never heard of or didn't know where they were. We had fun getting out our Atlas and doing some quick research.

We looked up Mauritania and Maurtius, Libya and Liberia, found Eritea on the east coast of Africa, checked out the islands of Palau and Tuvalu and Nauru (which is only 8 square miles!), and learned that the island of Comoros has a capital city of Moroni! We pinpointed Bahrain and Burkina Faso, learned that San Marino and Lesotho are the only countries located within other countries, made jokes about Togo (do they make sandwiches there?), Mali (is it pronounced mali or mali?), and Djibouti (did you shake yours?), and just enjoyed hearing these: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Guinea-Bissau and Kyrgystan. We looked up Moldova where are friends the Telfords will be serving their mission in a few weeks. We discovered that Dan looks more Brazilian than their flag bearer and thought the Swedish girls were the prettiest. We cheered for all the countries where our kids served missions, worried about the situations in North Korea, Georgia, Palestine, Congo, Iran, and Iraq and then marvelled at the U.S. delegation of 647 athletes! Not only was it entertainment but it was also educational!!
