It was a hymn written by Parley P. Pratt and was first published as a poem.
When the Church published the Manchester Hymnal in England, The Morning Breaks, the Shadows Flee” was the first hymn in the book. It has often been the first hymn in other LDS hymnals and is #1 in the current hymnal. In 1864, George Careless composed music to accompany Pratt's poem. The hymn has five verses and centers on the theme that God has restored the gospel to the earth.
