Fun Weekend in February!

Wish I'd taken more pictures of our fun weekend with the Wismers.

It was over Valentine's Day too.

They arrived Thursday evening February 13th just in time for dinner and for Mike to teach his online class.  They had driven all day from Oregon.

On Saturday the 15th we went to the Oakland Temple.  Becky and Mike were married here in 1974 and they had not been back since.  It was our first time to be there with the temple back in operation after the remodel.  We were gone from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.  There was bad traffic on the way home.  Not unusual on a Saturday.  We enjoyed some lunch at Chick Fil A.  The best part was the Endowment session and participating in some Sealings.

In the evening Dan and I attended the wedding reception for Kelli Barbour.  We saw all of the Perry family there!

Thursday, February 14th:

In the morning we visited the Auburn City Cemetery, a very pleasant and small cemetery in the foothills,  where Mike's parents' own some plots.   We even drove past the home they owned in Auburn, so there were some fun memories.

Then a quick lunch at home.

We wanted to do something that we had never done and the Wismers were willing. 

We took the Underground Tour of Old Sacramento!

It was fun and interesting.  Our guide for the tour was "C. K. McClatchy," a famous early Sacramentan.  (Interesting side note: This was also the day that the C. K. McClatchy Corporation declared bankruptcy.  They owned the Sacramento Bee.)

We learned how Sacramento lifted itself up out of the flood waters during the 1860s and 1870s!

Our guide explained how the streets and buildings were “Jacked Up!” to avoid further flooding.  We visited two spaces that were created by the city’s successful raising process. This historical tour includes hollow sidewalks, sloped alleyways, and the Underground spaces themselves.

California’s capital city first began in the mid-1800s as a settlement along the Sacramento River. It marked the spot where gold seekers heading for the Mother Lode in the Sierra foothills would leave their sailing ships and continue east on foot. In response to the flood of gold-fevered adventurers, a settlement began to grow along the river’s southern banks—a place bustling with shops, eateries, and lodgings.

Though the area was convenient for river access, it had a problem: It flooded—a lot. To get above the river’s incessant rising flow, the town began to raise its streets and buildings. Recent excavations have uncovered the former first floors of Old Sacramento, a maze of hidden underground spaces and streets

We got home in the late afternoon.  Some of us rested but Mike walked up to the Outlets and did some shopping!  Later we had a special Valentine's Day dinner with Tri Tip cooked by Dan and some homemade lemonade.  Becky brought mini Bundt cakes for us!

On Sunday we attended Folsom 3rd ward at Noon where Julianne Pulsipher gave her mission homecoming talk.
We got lots of visiting in over this long weekend before the Wismers left on Monday morning.
